The inspiration for Felsing’s introspective oils is firmly rooted in the lakes, streams, and woodlands surrounding his home in Mason, Michigan. His vision of nature is rendered in muted colors and soft contours that evoke a quiet, contemplative mood. Yet his landscapes often contain a suggestion of mystery. Forms are lost in shadow, edges blur, and shapes emerge from the background, like figures in a dream.
Although many of Felsing’s compositions give the impression of simplicity, his renderings of a tree, a pond, or a fallow field reveal a complexity of ideas and emotions. When we as viewers allow ourselves to be drawn into the scene, we discover subtleties that are not apparent upon first glance.
For Felsing, the subject matter is less important than the act of painting itself. His process is introspective and intuitive, an intensely personal meditation he has likened to memory or dream or music. The resulting works, with their nuanced tones and unique textures, resonate with the interior impulse that drives them.
This particular piece titled Day's End, as written in the painters notes, was completed at the time of his Mother's death. He felt this painting represented her and all the goodness, positive energy and love.
John Felsing was born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1954 and currently resides and works in Mason, Michigan.
His excellent guitar playing, mellow voice, friendship with his audience, and knowledge of his presentations is impressive. Add to that Matt’s own special brand of humor and you are in for a most entertaining and enlightening evening. You will feel his obvious love of folk music, both traditional and contemporary--the writers and performers, the heroes and villains. Matt sings songs of compassion, inner strength, humor, and every day living. He sings songs that you will feel and remember for a long time. You will love his music, you will love the journey that his music takes you on, and you will love the place that his music takes you to.
Matt was awarded "Best Overall Folk Performer" by the Detroit Music Awards for the year 2000, and his long list of credits include the prestigious Ann Arbor Folk Festival, the Detroit 300 celebration, The Ark, the Spirit of the Woods Festival, the New Jersey Folk Weekend, Louisville’s Kentucky Music Weekend, the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina, the Fox Valley Folk Festival, and hundreds of school and community presentations throughout the Great Lakes Region.
